Campsites. South Africa - Western Cape Province

We've spent quite a lot of time in the Western Cape over the past few years. The campsites are listed in alpahbetical order. I've included Sutherland although it's actually in the Northern Cape. Click on the name on the map or scroll down.

Algeria Campsite, Cederberg . Cape Nature. Jan 2013.

Location: S32 22 24.5 E19 03 51.2

Cost: R250 per night for up to 6 people.

Ablutions: Clean. Hot water.

Electric: Yes.

Sites: Marked pitches, some near the river and many with good shade.

Other: The site is in a lovely location in the Cederberg. There's a big pool in the river for swimming and several day walks. We were there during the busy New Year holiday season so camped at the top of the site - less shade but great views!

Bonnievale River Lodge. Jan 2013.

Electric: Yes.

Sites: There are two sections. At the bottom section near the river you cannot take cars/caravans. The 'upper' sites have a deck with plenty of shade.

Other: There's a kitchen with sinks, a fridge, freezer, electric plate, kettle and a microwave and a pool set in the middle of the vineyards.

Bontebok National Park. SANParks. Jan 2013.

Location: S32 19 59.6 E22 29 33.3

Cost: R200 per night plus a conservation fee unless you have a Wild Card.

Ablutions: Clean. Hot water.

Electric: Yes.

Sites: Good sized pitches but very little shade. There are a few sites down near the river but they have no electric.

Other: Good swimming in the Breede RIver. There are 3 walking trails from the campsite and you can drive around the gravel roads in the Park.

Clanwilliam Dam Resort.

Location: on the Sw outskirts of Clanwilliam.

Electric: Yes.

Sites: Marked sites overlooking the dam.

Other: Close to the town but secure. This is a family resort, it was almost empty when we were there but it probably gets busy over weekends and holidays.

Enjo Nature Farm, Biedou Valley. Dec 2012.

Electric: Yes.

Sites: A lovely, small site (only 3 pitches) under large trees.

Other: There's a big concrete dam for swimmimg with a shady deck and chairs. We had a lovely quiet Christmas here. The last 25km are on gravel. You can drive to Wupperthal from here. The nearest town for food and fuel is Clanwilliam which is 65km away.

Fish Hoek campsite. Feb 2013.

Location: S34 08 08.8 E18 26 02.2

Website: Cape Metropolitan campsites.

Cost: R148 per night. You get an invoice at the campsite and have to go to Pick n Pay in Fish Hoek to pay.

Ablutions: Clean. Hot water.

Electric: Yes.

Sites: There are marked pitches around a central ablutions. No shade.

Other: The site is between the town and the beach. It's next to the railway but it wasn't noisy overnight. You can walk into town from the site. We found the site to be safe and secure. February 2016: The road between Muizenburg and Fish Hoek is being upgraded which can cause long delays.

Goudini Spa. Jan 2013.

Sites: Paved, marked pitches.

Other: There are 2 large hot spa pools (lovely in the evening during the summer!). It gets busy (and more expensive) at weekends and holidays.

Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve. Cape Nature. Dec 2012.

Ablutions: They were being renovated while we were there. Mountain water - clean but very brown.

Electric: Yes.

Sites: Quite small pitches on 3 grassy terraces. We had to back the 'van in as we didn't think we'd be able to turn the 'van around manually.

Other: .Lovely views. There are several day walks in the forests in the Reserve.

Karoo National Park. SANParks. Jan 2016.

Sites: Mostly good sized marked pitches but quite close together. Some sites have shade.

Other: You'll almost certainly see several large tortoises around the campsite. There are driving trails around the Park. You can use the swimmimg pool at the main camp.

Kommetjie. Imhoff Caravan Park. January 2016

Location: Just to the north of Kommetjie town.

Sites: Lots of marked pitches, many of them have shade.

Other: The site is a short walk from the beach. We spent a week there and used it as as base for visiting places on the peninsula.

Limietberg Nature Reserve. Cape Nature. Dec 2012.

Ablutions: Rather run down. Hot water.

Electric: No.

Sites: Marked pitches,most have some shade.

Other: Lovely and quiet during the week but the campsite can get busy at weekends and there are also lots of day visitors on Saturdays and Sundays. There are several walks in the area and it's a short walk down to some lovely pools in the river.

Melkbosstrand. Ou Skip Caravan Park. March 2013.

Sites: Marked pitches. Most have some shade.

Other: A huge campsite within walking distance of the beach and only 30km north of Cape Town. You have the use of the swiming pool just outside the park.

Other: There are 3 pools around the site, one is just for adults.

Paarl. Berg River Resort. January 2016.

Location: A few km south of Paarl.

Sites: Marked pitches with a separate section for caravans.

Other: This is a large famiy resort so gets very busy during holidays and weekends. It's next to the Berg River where you can swim and there's also a swimming pool.

Sites: A few sites in a rocky valley. No shade.

Other: Close to the northern entrance to the Swartberg Pass.

Sites: Marked, large, grassy sites along the Breede River.

Other: A nice quite site. Some pitches can get flooded.

Sanddrif Campsite, Cederberg. Jan 2013.

Electric: Yes.

Sites: The sites are quite small and close together so if you want peace and quiet avoid school holidays! Many have good shade.

Other: The Sanddrif site is in a shady valley near the river with a big pool for swimming. There's another campsite nearby, Kliphuis, which is open when Sanddrif is full. We preferred it as it was very quiet with lovely views of the mountains and pools in the river for swimming.There are several day walks in the area, most require a permit which you can get from Dwarsrivier Farm

Stellenbosch. Mountain Breeze Caravan Park. February 2016.

Location: A few km south of Stellenbosch.

Sites: A large site with marked, shady pitches.

Other: There's a big swimming pool. You get some traffic noise from the main road and a small road at the back of the site.

Sutherland 1. Sterland Caravan Park

Location: On the southern outskirts of Sutherland.

Sites: 7 marked gravel sites amongst trees.

Other: Convenient for visiting the Sutherland Observatory.

Sutherland 2. Verlatenkloof Guest Farm.

Location: 25km south of Sutherland.

Ablutions: Clean. Hot water from a donkey boiler.

Electric: Yes.

Sites: There are sereral sites amongst some trees.

Other: You have to negotiate deep gullies to get onto the sites - OK for off-road caravans but not others. This is a working farm with goats and sheep. The farm is in a narrow valley close to the road, however there's not a lot of traffic.

Tietiesbaai, near Paternoster. Feb 2013.

Sites: Lots of sites along the beach and some amongst nearby rocks, which is where we camped. No shade.

Other: A lovely site on the West Coast but it gets very busy during the school holidays and weekends in summer.

Tulbagh. Fynbos Guest Farm. Jan 2013.

Location: 13km south of Tulbagh.

Sites: There are a few, rather small, marked pitches. Some have some shade.

Other: There's a shady area for sitting by the pool. It's close to a main road so you do get traffic noise. Excellent farm produced olives for sale.

Wagendrift Lodge. Dec 2012.

Sites: Small pitches mostly under low shady trees.

Other: You can drive to a concrete dam for swimming. If there's water in the river there are likely to be LOTS of mosquitoes. There are several walksaround the farm.

Wilderness Campsite (Ebb & Flow)

Sites: On this occassion we stayed at the Ebb & Flow North site which is in a gorge with grassy marked pitches next to the river.

Location: About 20km south of Worcester.

Sites: Lots of marked grassy sites along the Breede River. Many have good shade.

Other: A lovely quiet site. You can swim or canoe in the river. The owners are welcoming and very helpful.
